Tumkur, officially renamed as Tumakuru, is one of the industrial cities located in the state of Karnataka, INDIA also known as Shaikshanika Nagari (Land of Education) and Kalpatharu Nadu (Land of Coconut Trees). Since 28 August 2010, Tumkur has been accorded the status of a City Corporation. Tumkur is within Driving distance of Bangalore – Capital City of Karnataka. (70 Kms – 1:30 hours).

The Indian budget for 2014–2015 held on 10 July 2014 had announced that Tumkur is one of the cities in south India to be developed as an “Industrial Smart” city. The city has been selected as one among the 100 in the country shortlisted for the Smart City project.

Tumakuru is the District Head Quarter of Tumakuru District which is an administrative district in the state of Karnataka in India. The district is known for the production of coconuts, called as ‘Kalpataru Nadu’. It is the only discontiguous district in Karnataka (Pavagada Taluk has no geographical continuity with the rest of the district).

The closest Airport serving the city of Tumkur is the Kempegowda International Airport in the city of Bangalore, which is located about 90 km away.
